If you live in The Netherlands but don’t (fluently) speak the language, this might cause some confusion. When you’re visiting a drugstore that only has Dutch names on their products, for example. In that case, you’re probably not sure how to find the product you’re looking for. You can always ask an employee, but even though a lot of Dutch people speak English, there’s no guarantee they’ll be able to translate it for you. A language barrier can make it difficult and confusing to navigate these situations.

Because this is a common issue, we’ve decided to translate over a hundred of the most popular products at the Dutch drugstore to English. Shampoo, toothpaste or vitamin supplements: this list will help you find what you need or show you what to ask for when talking to an employee.

Keep in mind: most Dutch drugstores sell over-the-counter medication. This counts for medication that’s safe to use without interference of a medical professional, like painkillers, antacids or hayfever tablets. Always make sure to read the package leaflet beforehand. Some countries might not sell over-the-counter medication at drugstores, in which case you’ll most likely have to visit a pharmacy.
